ESU-California, Pa. NCAA Volleyball

LOCK HAVEN – California made 13 blocks and hit .301 in beating East Stroudsburg University, 15-4, 15-8, 14-16, 15-9, in the first round of the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region women’s volleyball tournament Friday night in Thomas Field House.

The California team was too big and strong at the net for the Warriors, who finished their season with a 16-17 record. Dingding Lu, listed at 6-2, hit .433 with 16 kills and made ten blocks to lead the Vulcans, who are now 24-10 and will play Edinboro in a semi-final round match Friday night.

ESU’s April Mellott was the match leader with 21 kills and added three service aces and eight digs. She was the key player as the Warriors rallied from a 14-13 deficit to win the third game.

The Warriors’ Cassie Brinn hit .353 with seven kills in 17 attempts and only one error. Andi Myers made eight kills and had a match-high 21 digs and setter Ashleigh Reinert, the team’s lone senior starter, had 39 assists and 11 digs.
