ESU-Mansfield Women's Swimming

EAST STROUDSBURG - East Stroudsburg University scored a school record-tying ninth victory by beating Mansfield, 106-81, in women's swimming Saturday.

The Warriors ended their dual meet season with a 9-2 record, matching the victory total achieved by both the 1986 (9-3) and 1987 (9-4) squad. Mansfield is now 4-7.

Two seniors, Erin Kowalik and Donna Gebhard, competing in their final Koehler Fieldhouse meet, led the way for Coach Lisa Pizzuto's squad.

Kowalik was a double-winner in the 100 and 200-yard freestyles, beating Mansfield's best swimmers. She was clocked in 55.16 in the 100 free, her second best time of the season, in edging the Mounties' Jaime Ragukonis, who was just over a half second back in 55.72.

In the 200, the ESU sprinter from Red Lion finished in 2:01.37, just over her season best of 2:01.09. She had almost a two-second edge over runner-up Jen Markart, timed in 2:03.28.

Gebhard sprinted to victory in the 50-yard freestyle in 25.34, leading a one-two-three ESU sweep in the event. She also anchored the Warriors' winning 200-yard medley relay, combining with Heather Clouser, Mikaela Thorne and Karen Scott, for a 1:55.29 clocking, the team's best time of the season.

There was one pool record broken as Mansfield's Cristina Jacome shattered the mark in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:00.97. The old mark was 1:03.07 set by Elissa Kaplan of Montclair State in 1998. Runner-up Heather Clouser of ESU also was under the record with a time of 1:02.45.
