ESU 1, Adelphia 0

EAST STROUDSBURG - Forward Gwen Gemberling poke in a goal with 2:27 left in a second overtime period to give nationally-ranked East Stroudsburg University a 1-0 women's soccer victory over Adelphi Wednesday.

Gemberling and teammate Kelly Frame both had raced by the Adelphi backline and sweeper Michelle Loh found them with a perfect lead pass.

Goalie Kara Gazzona came out, but before she could get to the ball Gemberling stretched out her right leg and toed the ball into the left side of the nets.

It was the second goal for the ESU freshman and the second assist for Loh, a junior. Both players are from Mechanicsburg and attended Cumberland Valley High School.

The Warriors, ranked 20th in the latest NCAA Division II national poll, are now 3-0-1. Adelphi, an NCAA tournament participants five times in the 1990s, dropped to 0-3 with the other losses to top-ranked Lynn and fifth-ranked Bloomsburg.

ESU goalie Liz Guinup made five saves in posting the shutout, her second of the season. The team's defense, featuring Loh and Tabby Reed in the middle and Lisa Levine and Shannon Mullins outside, has allowed only one goal in four games.

The Warriors had an edge in shots, 10-6. Adelphi goalie Kara Gazzano made eight saves.
