ESU Wrestling in EIWA Championships
PHILADELPHIA - East Stroudsburg University's Brad Kleckner (141) and Dan Roy (174) both won matches and reached the consolation quarter-finals before being eliminated in the 97th annual Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association Championships Sunday at the University of Pennsylvania's Palestra.
Kleckner, the sixth seed, pinned Kyle Bernhold of host Penn in 2:50 in his first consolation match before losing a major decision to seventh-seeded Tom Wysocki of Rutgers, 13-4. The ESU junior was 2-2 in the tournament for the second straight year.
Roy, making his third EIWA appearance, upset eighth-seeded P.J. Jones of Harvard, 3-2, but then fell on a major decision to fourth-seeded Greg Parker of Princeton, 10-0.
Both Kleckner and Roy fell one victory short of placing in the 14-team tournament.
The other five ESU wrestlers who advanced to Sunday' action all were beaten in their first consolation matches.
The Warriors finished 11th in the team standings with 7 points ahead of Columbia, 6 points; Syracuse, 2 1/2, and Franklin and Marshall, no points.
Host Penn, defending champion Lehigh and Harvard were battling for the title in the championship finals Sunday night.
