ESU-Army Wrestling
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Behind 7-6, Army won the last six weight classes to defeat East Stroudsburg University, 29-7, in a match between two Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association opponents Tuesday night.
The Warriors (2-2) took the lead when Kevin Rake downed Michael Quiroga, 6-2, at 133 pounds and Brad Kleckner won by major decision over Dave Ford, 13-5, at 141 pounds.
Rake, a sophomore from Pocono Mountain High School, scored a takedown in the first period and a three-point near fall in the third and built up riding time for his six points. He lifted his season record to 3-2.
Kleckner, a junior who won 24 matches last year, had a takedown in the first period, a takedown and a two-point near fall in the second period and two more takedowns in the third period in registering the major. He is now 2-1.
Army went ahead, 9-7, as Eric Miller edged Keith Kleckner, Brad’s younger brother, 2-0, on a first-period takedown at 149 pounds. The Cadets then coasted with three major decisions and a technical fall in four of the last five matches.
The closest match was at 165 pounds where Army’s Matt Ross got a takedown at the buzzer in edging Shawn Smith, 5-4.
Army raised is record to 2-1 while ESU is now 2-2. The Warriors won last year’s match between the two schools, 20-18.
