ESU Wrestling/Wilkes Open

WILKES-BARRE – East Stroudsburg University head coach Angelo Borzio and junior wrestler Dan Roy both advanced to the semi-finals of the 68th Wilkes Open Wrestling Tournament Thursday.

Borzio, a former Wilkes Open champion, won three matches at 285 pounds. The second-year ESU coach pinned John Fleming of Rutgers in 4:35, decisioned Dennis Maguire of Franklin and Marshall and pinned Kevin O’Meara of Edinboro in 3:00. His semi-final round opponent will be Jacob Lininger of Pittsburgh.

Roy also had three victories at 174 pounds. His wins were over Devin Pethtel of Cleveland State, 2-1; Christine Luciano, unattached, 3-2; and Scott McAdoo of Rutgers, 4-2. He will face Ted Dufresne of Lehigh in the semis.

Seven other ESU wrestlers, Daniel Gonzalez (125), Kevin Rake (33), Brad Kleckner (41), Matt Dudeck (157), Dan Madonna (184), Ben Zerance (197) and Marc Bauknecht (285), are still alive heading into the fourth round of consolations.

Rake, former Pocono Mountain High School wrestler, won by decision over Frank Hoeffner of Hofstra, 8-0, and Greg Licata of Nassau, 3-0, before bowing to Marat Tomaev of Penn State, 7-5, in the quarter-finals.

ESU assistant coach Jeremy Sluyter, a four-time NCAA national qualifier now competing at 141 pounds, trounced Kendrick Sadler of Harvard, 15-0, in the first round, but lost to Jim Hanning of Pitt-Johnstown, 1-0, in the second round. He then won two matches and is still alive in the consolations.

Competition will resume today at 9 a.m. The Wilkes Open is sponsored by the Keystone State Games.
