Warriors' Dan Roy Wins 174-Pound Title at ESU Open

East Stroudsburg, Pa. - East Stroudsburg University's Dan Roy always is at his best in the ESU Open Wrestling Tournament which he proved again Saturday night.

Roy became the Warriors' first ESU Open champion in three years when he won the 174-pound class at the 35thannual pre-season tournament in the LeRoy J. Koehler Fieldhouse. The senior from West Belmar, N.J. beat a future ESU wrestler, red-shirt freshman Brandon Mihalko, 3-2, on a takedown in the first period in the championship match.

Earlier, Roy edged Brad Shumlock of Boston College, 1-1 on a tie-breaker; Greg Chirieleison of Lehigh, 4-2 in sudden victory, and Dusty Heist of North Carolina, 6-1.

A four-year starter, Roy had finished third in the ESU Open in both 1998 and 1999 and won four matches and just missed placing last year.

Mihalko, the former PIAA state runner-up from Bethlehem-Liberty High School who will join the ESU squad in January, scored four victories, pinning Joe Hill of Lock Haven in 2:12, winning decisions over Todd Brennan, unattached, 5-1; Brian Brittingham of Gloucester Community College, 8-6, and John Carr, unattached from ESU, 15-9.

The Warriors had two other place-winners in Marc Bauknecht, third at 285 pounds, and Carr, fourth at 174.

ESU's last champion was Jeremy Sluyter at 125 pounds in 1998.
