ESU-Drexel Wrestling
PHILADELPHIA - East Stroudsburg University won three individual weight classes for the sixth time in seven matches, but couldn't get any more in bowing to Drexel, 30-13, in wrestling Saturday.
ESU's three winners were Danny Gonzalez by a pin at 125 pounds, Brad Kleckner on a decision at 141 and Dan Roy on a major decision at 174.
Gonzalez, a freshman from Pocono Mountain High School, took Chris Golla down in the first period, sank in a half nelson and then took him to his back for a pin in 2:06. It was his first collegiate dual match victory against one loss and left his overall record at 5-2.
Kleckner gained his third straight win by downing Dante Cifelli, 8-5. He scored a takedown and a three-point near fall in the first period and another takedown in the second period. He lifted his record to 11-7.
Rake scored a 13-2 win over Carl Schmidt with two takedowns and a near fall in the first priod and two more takedowns in the second period. He has the team's most wins with a 14-11 record.
Drexel registered two pins by Bill Heverly (133) and Pat Miller (184), a technical fall by
Matt Kennett (149) and a major decision by Chris Jones (197).
Heverly countered a move by ESU's Kevin Rake and took him to his back for a pin in only 55 seconds. Miller got a defensive pin over Dan Madonna in 5:24.
The Dragons raised their record to 10-4 while ESU dropped to 4-10. The Warriors will compete in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Wrestling Championships Friday and Saturday at Clarion.
