WR1-16

ESU Wrestling/Montclair Quad

UPPER MONTCLAIR, N.J. - East Stroudsburg University standout lightweight Jeremy Sluyter has taken on many Bills, Bobs and Johns during his wrestling career, but for the first time ever Sunday, he was matched against a Betsy.

Sluyter's opponent in a dual match at Montclair State was Betsy Montanez - not a name-challenged man but rather a woman.

The match didn't take long as Sluyter shot in for a double leg takedown and then sank in a cradle for a pin in 23 seconds.

"Jeremy did what he had to do," said ESU Coach Angelo Borzio. "It was just another victory for him."

Borzio admitted that he kidded his star wrestler that he should let Betsy take him down a couple of times to make the match interesting, but Jeremy emphatically said, 'no.'

Montanez, a junior from Linden, N.J., had wrestled one previous dual match, but against woman from Kings Point. She took two forfeits for Montclair State earlier in the day against Coppin State and Howard.

"Just having her at the weight gave Montclair 12 points. We weren't going to forfeit to her," Borzio said.

Sluyter's pin raised his record to 13-4 and was his third pin of the season. It wasn't his fastest as he pinned Kevin Gettlemen of Cortland State in 22 seconds in December.

Actually, Montclair State didn't need points from Betsy in an easy 32-14 win over ESU. The Warriors had beaten Coppin State, 34-12, and Howard, 39-12, and are now

6-3 on the season.

ESU had three wrestlers, Sluyter, Dan Madonna and Rich Koehler, go 3-0. Sluyter had two previous forfeits before his pin.

Madonna pinned Thomas Matthews of Coppin State in 1:20 of their 197-pound match and then moved down to 184 to edge Carmen Mercandante of Montclair, 8-6. He had a forfeit win over Howard.

Koehler also won by forfeit over Howard and then scored a major decision over Robert Bailey of Coppin State in 15-6 and a technical fall over Dave Webb of Montclair State, 20-5 in 5:15. He is undefeated in duals at 9-0 and is 13-2 overall.
