EAST STROUDSBURG - East Stroudsburg University's Brad Kleckner and Kevin Rake won the first and last matches, but Rutgers dominated the rest of the matches-up to score a 27-12 Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association victory Wednesday.
Kleckner recorded the most exciting wrestling win of the season in the Koehler Fieldhouse when he stunned Tom Wysocki, 13-9, in sudden-victory overtime in the 141-pound match which started the evening.
The ESU junior took Wysocki to his back in overtime for a takedown and two-point near fall and the victory. The Rutgers wrestler came into the match with a 15-4 record and was fresh from winning a title in the 21-team Millersville Belles Tournament last weekend.
Kleckner, whose record is now 9-7, rallied from deficits with a reversal and takedown in the first period and then took the lead, 9-8, with a takedown in the final seconds of the second period. Wysocki escaped in the third period to tie the score and send the match into overtime.
"Brad was aggressive and he wrestled to win - he went after Wysocki the whole match," said ESU Coach Angelo Borzio. "In fact, the whole team competed a lot better than it did last Saturday night (a 28-10 loss to Bucknell). Even in the matches we lost badly, we competed for the entire seven minutes."
Rake pinned Jon Rodriquez in 3:16 at 133 pounds in the final match of the night. After a scoreless first period, the ESU sophomore from Pocono Mountain High School started on top in the second period and after a minute, caught Rodriquez and cradled him to the mat. It was his third pin of the season and evened his record at 8-8.
The Warriors (3-9) had only one other winner in Matt Dudeck who battled to a 6-2 win over Chris Madia at 157 pounds. Dudeck, now 9-9, had a takedown in the first period, rode Madia the entire second period and then had a match-clinching takedown with 28 seconds remaining.
Rutgers (3-2) scored three major decisions, won three regular decisions and gained a forfeit win for its 27 points. The Scarlet Knights' Justin Haskins (174) won his 20th match against seven defeats by edging Dan Roy, 4-1, with a takedown and an escape in the third period and 2:11 riding time.
Rutgers' Ricardo Romero, ranked 17th in the nation at 197, easily beat Ben Zerance, 12-0, to raise his record to 15-5. Other winners included Tom Tanis (184), now 18-5, and Jonathon Forster (149), now 18-8.
