ESU-Cheyney Women's Basketball

 

EAST STROUDSBURG - Cheyney scored the last six points of the game to upend East Stroudsburg University, 67-62, and end a 31-game Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference women's basketball losing streak Saturday.

The Wolves had not beaten a PSAC Eastern Division opponent since they defeated ESU in February, 1998. They had lost 17 straight games overall this season and are now 2-17 overall and 1-6 in the conference. ESU fell to 4-16 overall and 1-5 in PSAC play.

With her team behind, 62-61, with 1:02 to play, Zenobia Bey sank two free throws to put Cheyney ahead. There was no scoring until Bey made a steal to set up Gertrude Evans for a lay up which made the score, 65-62 with 25 seconds remaining.

ESU's Kelly Hutchison was called for an offensive foul to give the Wolves possession again and after another Warrior foul, Evans sank two free throws to wrap up the victory with 18 seconds remaining.

Evans finished with 20 points while Tonya Slayton added 13 points and was the game's top rebounder with 11. Bey scored 12 points and Shivonne Augustine fed off seven assists.

Megan Ross led ESU with 16 points, five assists and three steals. Stephanie Kuhn contributed 14 points, including four 3-pointers. Pam Helt had 13 points and Michelle Pilenza ten
