ESU-Kutztown Women’s Basketball
EAST STROUDSBURG – Hogtied by a hustling East Stroudsburg University defense, Kutztown finally got untracked late in the first half and went on to defeat the Warriors, 60-51, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division women's basketball game Wednesday night.
The Golden Bears (18-5, 7-3 PSAC) could not solve the ESU defense and didn’t score a field goal for almost ten minutes. Meanwhile, the Warriors took a 10-3 lead with Amanda Buss hitting twice from the paint and Shannon Schwilk making two driving layups.
Brianne Homyak finally got Kutztown’s first hoop from the pivot with 10:14 left in the half. She followed immediately with a foul line jumper en route to a game-high 21-point performance.
ESU (11-13, 3-7 PSAC) clung to the lead and had a 20-17 advantage on Kelly Hutchison’s ten-footer with 4:23 left in the half. But then point guard Angie Holland made three straight assists, two on baskets by Homyak and one by Stacie Miscavage to score the last nine points of the half for a 26-20 lead.
The Warriors stayed within striking range for the first ten minutes of the second half, trailing by only 36-31, but an eight-point Kutztown run, six of the points by center Keri Suydam, put the game out of reach.
The only question down the stretch was whether Schwilk would reach 1,000 career points. She needed ten for the night, but finished with only eight and now will have to wait until Saturday's home game against Bloomsburg for the final two.
Stephanie Kuhn led the ESU offense with 14 points including a season-high four three-pointers in five attempts. Hutchison added 13 points. Suydam had 14 points and Holland contributed 11 points and eight assists for Kutztown.
