ESU-Centenary Women's Basketball
EAST STROUDSBURG - Marie Schlegel put on a record-breaking show from her point guard position in leading East Stroudsburg University to an 84-43 victory over Centenary in a women's basketball game Wednesday night.
Schlegel made 15 assists to break the school single-game mark of 12 which she had tied in a win over Lincoln last week. Nan Wagner set the original mark of 12 against Slippery Rock in 1986 and Laura Lenio matched it against West Chester in 1988.
The 5-4 senior from Lebanon took control right from the start with assists on nine of the team's first ten baskets. She had 11 assists at halftime, tied the record by setting up a layup by Amanda Buss with 15:52 left and broke the mark by feeding Buss for another layup with 14:53 remaining.
Schlegel sat out most of the second half and played only 27 minutes. She also added six points on three for five shooting from the floor and grabbed four rebounds. She now has 54 assists in seven games for an average of close to eight assists per game.
The beneficiaries of Schlegel's passes were forward Shannon Schwilk, who finished with a game-high 18 points, and Buss, who added 17. Michele Pilenza also was in double figures with ten points while Stephanie Kuhn and Lauren Camisa added nine apiece.
The Warriors (3-4) scored the first four points on Schwilk's foul line jumper after a Schlegel pass and then Tiffany Barnes' rebound basket. They built the lead to 12-2 after two buckets by Kuhn and had a 20-4 edge midway through the half. The halftime difference was 20 points at 38-18.
Centenary (4-3) had one double-figure scorer, Heather Spence with 12 points.
