ESU-Southern Connecticut Women's Basketball
NEW HAVEN, Ct. - East Stroudsburg University's Kelly Hutchison scored in double figures for the sixth straight game, but she had little support as the Warriors went down to a 66-43 women's basketball defeat to Southern Connecticut Friday.
Hutchison scored 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds just under her season averages of 12.9 points and 8.2 rebounds per game. The 6-0 senior forward made six of 14 shots from the floor and also added two steals, an assist and a blocked shot.
Southern Connecticut had three players score in double figures in guard Kathleen Smith 16 points, forward Rebecca Roy 14 and guard Kate Donohue 12. Roy also fed off five assists.
Forward Amanda Herzog came off the bench in her season debut to pull down a game-high 13 rebounds, including eight in the second half. She was the Owls' leading scorer last season, but was ineligible to play first semester.
ESU (2-7) stayed in striking range throughout the first half, trailing by only 29-22 at halftime . Southern (5-3) pulled away in the second half, however, with 47 percent shooting (15 for 32) for a game total of 42 percent (27 for 64). The Warriors went ice cold in the second half, making only 27 percent of their shots (8 for 30) and finished with a 30 percent mark for the game (18 for 59).
It was the last single game for either of the ESU basketball teams. The Warriors will play women's and men's doubleheaders the rest of the season with the teams returning to action for afternoon twinbills at California Jan. 6th and at IUP Jan. 7th.
