ESU-Georgian Court Women's Basketball
LAKEWOOD, N.J. - Senior Shannon Schwilk poured in 18 points and sophomore Michele Pilenza added a career-high 15 as the East Stroudsburg University women's basketball team closed its first-semester action by beating Georgian Court, 70-64, Wednesday.
The Warriors are now 4-6 and will have an 12-day break before their next game, at home against Lock Haven Jan. 4 at 7 p.m. Georgian Court fell to 4-7.
Schwilk connected on 8 of 15 shots from the floor and made both of her foul shots. She also was the team's top rebounder with eight. It was the 15th straight double-digit scoring performance over two seasons for the 5-9 forward and lifted her season's average to 15.0 points per game.
Pilenza, making the first start of her career, was 6 for 9 from the floor and 3 for 4 from the foul line. Her previous high had been 12 points last season.
The Warriors played a pressure defense and got their running game going to open a big first-half lead. The key was point guard Marie Schlegel who sparked the team's fast break and got five of her game total of seven assists. The halftime difference was 18 points at 39-21.
It still was an 18-point game at 64-48 with six minutes remaining when Georgian Court rallied back. The Lions lived at the foul line as they cut the margin to five points at 66-61 before Schlegel's four straight free throws in the final 25 seconds wrapped it up.
ESU put four players in double figures for the first time this season with Stephanie Kuhn contributing 13 points, including a pair of second-half three-pointers, and Schlegel 11. Melody Kline and Stefanie Gachiniero led Georgian Court with 12 points apiece with Kline grabbing a game-high 15 rebounds.
