ESU-California Women's Basketball
EAST STROUDSBURG - Sameera Philyaw scored 26 points, grabbed nine rebounds and made four assists as California raised its record to 9-1 by trouncing East Stroudsburg University, 78-37, in women's basketball Friday night.
Philyaw, a 6-1 forward, connected on 13 of 18 shots, all from inside on layups, short jumpers and rebound baskets. Sara McKinney added 14 points and also had nine rebounds and 6-7 Susie Gyarfas scored 12 points and had five boards.
The Vulcans dominated the inside game with 33 of their 37 baskets inside the paint and a 51-25 rebounding advantage. They displayed sharp passing with 23 assists with Stacia Hamilton the leader with five.
California broke out to 10-2 lead, led by 44-15 at halftime and cruised to their 41-victory margin. Coach Darcie Vincent was limited in her substitutions as she only had eight players dressed for the game.
ESU was led by Katie Wear with eight points with Vanessa Kraft adding seven. The Warriors are now 3-5 and will play host to IUP today at 1 p.m.
