ESU-Slippery Rock Women's Basketball
EAST STROUDSBURG - Slippery Rock's Jackie Altenweg scored 16 of her 17 points in the second half to spoil a gallant upset bid by East Stroudsburg University and lead the Rock to a 64-51 women's basketball victory Sunday.
Behind by 9-0 in the opening minutes and 23-10 late in the half, the Warriors scored the last nine points of the half by close to within points at 23-19. They briefly took the lead in the second half at 29-28 and trailed by only two points at 37-35 with 10:42.
Then Altenweg took charge, leading a 12-2 Slippery Rock run with seven points on a three-pointer, a driving layup and a 16-footer. That put the Rock ahead by 12 at 49-37. The closest ESU could come the rest of the way was seven points.
The Warriors had nine players score points, but none hit double figures with Vanessa Kraft the leader with eight points and eight rebounds. ESU's Tiffany Barnes took game rebounding honors with ten and scored six points.
The game matched new ESU coach Juliene Simpson against her daughter, Jennifer, a freshman on the Slippery Rock team. Jennifer played four minutes in the first half, grabbed one rebound but did not score.
The loss dropped the Warriors to 1-4 with the next start against Green Mountain Friday at 6 p.m. in a first round game of the 37th Rotary Pocono Classic. Slippery Rock, which was 17-10 last season, improved to 2-4.
