ESU-Southern Connecticut Women's Basketball
EAST STROUDSBURG - Southern Connecticut broke open a close game with a 20-4 run over the last five minutes to defeat East Stroudsburg University, 66-53, in women's basketball Wednesday night.
Ahead by only 50-49, the Owls scored five straight points on Kelly Carpenter's three-pointer and Jill Carpenter's driving layup. After an ESU basket, they then reeled off seven straight points, with Amanda Forcucci scoring four of them, to open the lead to 62-51 with 1:35 remaining.
Kelly Carpenter led the Southern scoring with 16 points while Kathleen Smith added 12 and Amanda Herzog ten.
Shannon Schwilk was the Warriors' top scorer with 15 points and Amanda Buss had 13.
ESU's Kelly Hutchison took game rebounding honors with a career-high 11.
The loss spoiled ESU's home opener and dropped the team's record to 1-3. Southern is now 4-1.
The Warriors' next start will be against Concordia, N.Y. in the first round of the 35th Rotary Pocono Classic Friday at 5 p.m. The other women's game will match IUP and St. Michael's at 1 p.m.
