ESU-Edinboro Women's Basketball
EAST STROUDSBURG - Edinboro spoiled the home coaching debut of East Stroudsburg University's new women's basketball coach Juliene Simpson by beating the Warriors, 69-52, Saturday in the Koehler Fieldhouse.
The Fighting Scots shot 49 percent from the floor on 27 baskets in 55 attempts and made 6 of 10 three-pointers. They had four double-figure scorers with Lachelle Crawl hitting for 14 points, Suzanne Petruska 12 and Courtney Thompson and Jodi Calderone 10 apiece.
ESU was led by Heather Woolf with 12 points while Michele Pilenza fed off five assists and Vanessa Kraft and Tiffany Barnes each pulled down six rebounds.
Although Edinboro led throughout and had a 37-27 halftime edge, the Warriors made it exciting early in the second half as Woolf scored three straight baskets to bring the team back to within six points at 39-33.
The Fighting Scots slowly broke it open, however, with Calderone canning two 3-points to open a 15-point, 53-38 edge midway through the second half.
The Warriors dropped to 1-3 and will play host to Slippery Rock today at 1 p.m. The Rock bowed to unbeaten Kutztown, 55-49, Saturday. Edinboro lifted its record to 2-0.
