ESU-Cheyney Women's Basketball
EAST STROUDSBURG - Freshman Katie Wear scored a career-high 15 points and Dana Thompson added 12 points as East Stroudsburg University opened its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division women's basketball season by beating Cheyney, 60-49, Wednesday night.
Wear, who missed the team's last game because of illness, hit on five of nine shots, including three of six 3-pointers, and added two free throws. She benefited from the passing of guard Shelly Garlach, who made a game-high six assists.
Thompson came off the bench and sparked the team with her inside play, drawing fouls and getting three baskets and six free throws.
With the score tied at 10, the Warriors took the lead by outscoring Cheyney, 14-4, including runs of six and eight points. Wear hit a 3-pointer for the go-ahead basket and followed with a free throw. Niki Cox then banked in a layup for a 16-10 edge.
After the Wolves closed to 16-14, Thompson worked inside for a basket, Heather Wolfe put back an offensive rebound and Barnes drained a 12-footer, wrapped around free throws by Thompson and Garlach, to open a 24-14 gap.
The halftime difference was six points at 25-19. Cheyney never got close in the second half and ESU's biggest lead was 46-30 with 8:43 remaining.
The win pushed the Warriors within one game of .500 at 5-6 while the Wolves dropped to 2-10. Last year, Cheyney had upset ESU in the Koehler Fieldhouse, 67-62.
