ESU-California Women's Basketball

 

CALIFORNIA - Guard Sameera Philyaw scored 17 points and pulled down 15 rebounds as California downed East Stroudsburg University, 84-56, in a non-conference women's basketball game Saturday.

The Vulcans had three other players in double figures with Stacia Hamilton adding 14 points, Viniah Palmer 12 and Shujuane Brown ten. The fifth starter, Holly Householder just missed with nine points.

ESU's Megan Ross tied her season high with 17 points while Kelly Hutchison contributed 14 points, her seventh straight double-figure scoring game.

Although California broke out to a 10-0 lead, the Warriors battled back with nine straight points including three-pointers by Ross and Steph Kuhn and stayed within striking range until late in the first half. The halftime difference was 12 points at 44-32.

ESU closed within seven points at 47-40 on two more back-to-back three pointers by Kuhn and Ross. The Vulcans then broke it open with a 16-2 spurt with Hamilton scoring six points and Philyaw five to lead, 63-42, with 12:05 remaining.

The Warriors, now 2-8, will travel to IUP for a 1 p.m. game today. California, 6-4, will entertain Kutztown today for a 1 p.m. contest.
