ESU-Lock Haven Women's Basketball
East Stroudsburg, Pa. - East Stroudsburg University had 21 more shots, three more rebounds and eight less turnovers than Lock Haven in a women's basketball game Sunday, but poor shooting did in the Warriors in a 64-59 loss.
ESU (3-11) fired up 71 shots, but made only 20 of them for 28 percent. Lock Haven (8-6) took only 50 shots, but had more field goals with 23 for a 46 percent shooting average.
Behind at halftime, 32-28, the Warriors went ahead, 44-43, on Michele Pilenza's baseline jumper with 12:26 remaining. It was short-lived lead, however, as Kristi Ward drilled in two straight 3-pointers to put the Lady Eagles in front for keeps, 49-44.
A later six-point run with Stacy Herlocher scoring twice on layups, off passes from Ward, opened the margin to nine points at 57-48 with 5:39 left. ESU never got closer than the final five-point margin the rest of the way.
Michele Pilenza led the Warriors with a career-high 20 points which included 12 free throws in 15 attempts. Pam Helt hit a double-double for the second straight game with 12 points and 12 rebounds while Kelly Hutchison added 11 points.
Shawna Boyd was Lock Haven's top scorer with 16 points followed by Young with 12 and Amy Daniels with ten. Ward fed off seven assists to go with her nine points. Daniels grabbed 12 rebounds.
Lock Haven freshman Cyndi Crowl from Stroudsburg High School played seven minutes, had one assist and one rebound, but did not score.
