ESU-Clarion Women's Basketball

East Stroudsburg, Pa. - Center Christina Lentz scored the first two baskets and Clarion led all the way in defeating East Stroudsburg University, 72-52, in a non-conference women's basketball game Saturday.

Lentz scored from inside after only 13 seconds and then made another basket in the pivot with 1:05 gone to put her team ahead for keeps. It was never close as the Golden Eagles led by 35-23 at halftime and 51-29 with 12:02 remaining.

Tameka Washington led Clarion with 19 points, making 8 for 10 shots from the floor. Allison Stodart followed with 13 points, including three 3-pointers, while Lantz and Courtney Willman added 11 points apiece.

ESU's Pam Helt took game honors with 20 points and 13 rebounds, both career highs. She made 12 free throws in 13 tries and had four baskets.

Michele Pilenza was the team's only other double-figure scorer with 13 points.

The Warriors' Kelly Hutchison played only seven minutes because of illness and had only one point, ending her string of double-digit scoring games at eight.

The statistics showed Clarion's dominance. The Eagles shot 49 percent from the floor (25 for 51) while ESU had 18 more shots, but hit only 23 percent of them (16 for 69). Clarion had a 50-38 rebounding edge with Willman grabbing 12.

The Eagles raised their record over the .500 mark at 7-6 while ESU dropped to 3-10. Both teams will play again today with the Warriors playing host to Lock Haven and Clarion traveling to Kutztown for 1 p.m. games.
