ESU-Mansfield Women's Basketball
MANSFIELD - Mansfield outscored East Stroudsburg University, 18-2, over the last six minutes to end the Warriors, 59-53, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division women's basketball opener Wednesday night.
The Warriors led, 51-41, with 6:04 remaining before Mansfield ran off ten straight points, capped by Brandy Lingenfelter's jump shot, to tie the game at 51 with 3:15 left.
ESU took the lead for the last time, 53-51, on Shannon Schwilk's jumper with 3:09 remaining, but then the Mounties hit the last eight points of the game.
Colleen Doherty connected on a three-pointer with 2:31 left for the go-ahead basket. Jennifer Nichols followed with a lay-up with 1:53 to go and then her sister, Heather Nichols made a three-point play with a jump shot and a free throw with 59 seconds left to wrap up the scoring.
ESU went cold from the floor down the stretch and had its four-game winning streak broken. The team is now 7-7 while Mansfield improved to 3-9.
Schwilk scored a game-high 20 points on nine for 13 shooting from the floor and two for four from the foul, but for the first time this season the Warriors failed to put a second player in double figures. Point guard Marie Schlegel fed off seven assists while Tiffany Barnes came off the bench to pull down ten rebounds, all on the defensive boards.
Heather Nichols led Mansfield with 17 points and ten rebounds while Jennifer Nichols added 13 points and Allyson Buss 12.
