Peter Viteritti has been selected as the new head men's and women's volleyball
coach at East Stroudsburg University. Viteritti comes to ESU after serving as
the head women's volleyball coach the past five seasons at Holy Cross. Viteritti
takes over for John Greenlee, who left ESU after only two seasons. He inherits
a women's team who wrapped up the 2001 season at 18-10 (9-1 Pennsylvania State
Athletic Conference-East Division) and 7-17 for the men in 2002.
"I'm very excited about the opportunity to coach both teams and be part of East
Stroudsburg University athletics. The great tradition is what drew me here and
I look forward to building onto the Warrior volleyball tradition," says Viteritti.
Viteritti turned an 0-23 Holy Cross women's volleyball team from 1996 into a
competitive winning program over his five years at the helm. The Crusaders recorded
the best winning percentage (.440) in 13 years of the program with an 11-14
mark in 2001. His squad had their first player selected to the First Team All-Patriot
League and first District 1 Academic All-American along with the team's best
Patriot League finish of 6-6 in 2000.
"I know the women's program has had some very good recent success and look to
build upon that and strive to get the team back to the NCAA national tournament
where they were a few years ago. The men have had a track record of being very
good and hope to take the squad to the next level as well," explains the new
head coach.
The Warriors competed in the 2000 NCAA Division II Women's Volleyball Championships
after winning their second of three straight Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference
Eastern Division titles. Viteritti also guided the men's volleyball club team
at Worchester Poly Tech from 1996-2000.
The Nashua, New Hampshire product started his collegiate coaching career as
an assistant women's volleyball coach at Northeastern University for the fall
of 1996. He spent two seasons as the head coach of the Metrowest 18 and Under
Junior Olympic Team from Franklin, Mass. In 1997, Viteritti's placed 25th at
the AAU Nationals after a regular season which it had three top three finishes
and saw the team take first in the Gold Division at the Regional Championships
in 1996. Viteritti is a "pro-rated" outdoor player and competed for five years
professionally (1992-97) in two man volleyball tournaments across the country.
He was part of the Amateur Volleyball Association OPEN Level National Championship
in 1994 and part of the seventh place finishing team in the East Coast Championships
at Atlantic City, NJ in 1995.
Coach Viteritti holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from Plymouth
State College in Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1994.
