ESU's Griffin Makes Academic All-District Team

 

BETHLEHEM - East Stroudsburg University's record-breaking sprinter Cheryl Griffin has been chosen on the Verizon Academic All-District II Women's College Division At-Large Spring Sports first team. She was a second team choice last year.

A total of 20 athletes, ten on the first team and ten on the second team, were honored from the eligible sports of crew, golf, lacrosse, tennis, track and field and water polo. The District II college division consists of schools in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, West Virginia and the District of Columbia.

Voting was done by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America. All first team selections, including Griffin, will now move on to the national ballot to be considered for the Verizon Academic All-America team.

Griffin graduated Summa Cum Laude with a bachelor's degree in English Teacher Certification on May 12th. She carried a 3.825 average into her final semester.

She was honored as both the Senior Female Athlete of the Year and the Senior Female Scholar Athlete of the Year at the recent Athletic Awards Banquet.

The Walden, N.Y. resident holds five individual school records in the 55, 60 and 200-meter dashes indoors and the 100 and 200-meter dashes outdoors. She also is a member of four school record-setting relay teams.

She ran the fastest leg with a 56.6 split on a 4 x 400-meter relay team which recently repeated as the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference champion. She also anchored a 4 x 100-meter relay team which placed second in the conference.

Individual, Griffin placed second in the PSAC in the 200-meter dash for the second straight year and was fourth in the 100-meter dash. She was a four-year conference place-winner.

Indoors, she was named the outstanding female runner at this year's ECAC Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships. She was a double winner with victories in the 200-meter dash for the third straight year and the 55-meter dash. She also ran on championship 4 x 200 and 4 x 400-meter relay teams.

She qualified for the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships as a junior in the 55-meter dash, but did not place.

Griffin was a New York State place-winner in the 300-meter dash for Valley Central High School. She was a sectional champion in both the 55 and 300 dashes.

She is the second ESU athlete to make an Academic All-District first team this year. Swimmer Erin Kowalik was honored on the At-Large Fall-Winter teams and later made the Academic All-America second team.
