ESU Track and Field
KUTZTOWN – East Stroudsburg University’s three senior standouts, Shavanna Ross, Cheryl Griffin and Quanette Jester were all double winners for the Warriors’ only victories in a quadrangular track and field meet Friday.
Host Kutztown scored a narrow victory in the women’s meet with 213 points, beating ESU 199, West Chester 67 and Bloomsburg 33.
The men’s meet was more one-sided with the Golden Bears scoring 233 ½ points with ESU second with 172 followed by West Chester 120 ½ and Bloomsburg 20.
Ross turned in her best outdoor performances of the season in winning the 400-meter hurdles in 61.89 and the high jump at 5-6. Both marks bettered the provisional qualifying standards for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships. She also was second in the 100-meter hurdles in 15.35.
Griffin swept to victory in the 100-meter dash in 12.24 and the 200 dash in 25.40. Jester was first in the long jump with a leap of 17-11 and the triple jump at 37-3 ½.
ESU All-America Jenn Grube was a runner up in two events, the discus with a throw of 115-8 and the javelin at 138-4. Also placing second were Mikaela Thorne in the shot put, 36-8 ½; Kelli Strickler, high jump, 5-1; Christel Hibbard, 1,500 run, 4:59.56, and Nova Tindall, 5,000, 20:40.1.
The Warriors’ top competitor in the men’s meet was Mark Stinson, who was second in the 200-meter dash in 22.25, and tied for second in the 100 in 10.87. Mike Newhard was runner up in the long jump at 21-6 ½ and tied for second in the high jump at 6-6.
Other second-place finishers were Darryl Brown, 3,000 steeplechase, 10:17.81; Mike Webster, 5,000, 16:41; David Dean, javelin, 189-3, and Brian Holcovic, pole vault, 15-0.
All four teams will compete in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Track and Field Championships Thursday through Saturday at Shippensburg.
