ESU Track and Field/NCAA Championships

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Freshman Mike Newhard of East Stroudsburg University cleared only the opening height of 6-6 1/4 and failed to placed in the high jump at the NCAA Division II Track and Field Championships Friday night at SIU-Edwardsville.

Newhard had won the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championship two weeks ago with leap of 6-10 which would have placed fourth in the NCAA competition. Jesse Lipscombe of Morehouse won the national title at 7-1 3/4 with Collat Johnson of Tarleton State second at 7-0 1/2 and Brian Brown of Southern Connecticut third at 6-10 1/4.

The Warriors will have competitors in four events today. All-America Jenn Grube will compete in the women's javelin in which she was fifth last year and David Dean will be entered in the men's javelin. Quanette Jester will be in the field in both the triple jump and the high jump while Shavanna Ross also will be in the high jump.
