SHIPPENSBURG - Senior Cheryl Griffin capped her graduation day by leading the East Stroudsburg University 4 x 400-meter relay team to its second straight Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference title as the ESU women scored their most points in 19 years in the PSAC meet Saturday.

The Warriors finished third with 85 points, the most since the 1982 squad totaled 112 points in placing second.

The ESU men scored 51 points, more than double their 2000 total of 20 points, in finishing seventh. Freshman Mike Newhard became the school's first solo champion ever in the men's high jump with a winning leap of 6-10.

Griffin, running the last race of a sensational four-year career, blazed around the quarter-mile track in 56.6 to give the ESU relay team a commanding lead in its repeat victory. Other runners were Jen Eye, who led off with a 61.4 leg, Angela Gray, 59.2 as the third runner, and, Shavanna Ross, who brought it home in 57.9.

The team's total time was 3:55.35, which was more than a second ahead of Kutztown, which finished in 3:56.37.

Griffin graduated Summa Cum Laude with a degree in English although she missed official graduation ceremonies at ESU because of the track meet. She was honored, along with the seniors on other conference teams in a special ceremony, before the start of the meet.

The Walden, N.Y. sprinter then anchored the Warriors' 4 by 100-meter relay team to a school record 48.27 and a second-place finish. The other three team members were Jackie Babbini, Eye and Quanette Jester.

Individually, Griffin placed second in the 200-meter dash for the second straight year in 25.14 and was fourth in the 100 dash in 12.39. She left ESU as the Senior Athlete of the Year, Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year and the holder of nine records, five of them individual.

Newhard is just starting his ESU career and gained the Warriors' first PSAC individual title in three years. He cleared 6-10, his collegiate best, on his second attempt. He had gone 7-0 for Southern Lehigh High School two years ago.

"Mike hit his vertical; he went straight up and over, He had jumping too far out in many meets," said Karen Way, ESU jump coach and a three-time PSAC champion from 1989-1991.

Back in 1940, East Stroudsburg's Ed Morgan finished in a three-way tie for first place in the high jump at the conference meet. The winning height 61 years ago was 6-0 1/2.

The Warriors also had the runner-up in the high jump Saturday in sophomore Brad Fees, who cleared 6-8. He was one of six ESU runners-up during the day.

The most impressive may have been David Dean, who placed second in the javelin with a throw of 200-10, one of only a handful of ESU throwers to better 200 feet in the event . The distance provisionally qualified him to compete in the NCAA Division II Track and Field Championships May 24-26 at SIU-Edwardsville.

Also placing second on the men's side were Mark Stinson in the 200-meter dash in 22.19 and the 4 x 400-meter relay team in a season-best 3:19.54. Stinson ran a 48.3 anchor leg following Andy Morris, 50.2, Dan Garibaldi, 50.1, and Jim Dawson, 50.2, on the track.

Three ESU senior women closed outstanding careers with second-place finishes. Jester gained her 13TH conference top-six finish with a second in the triple jump at 37-11 1/2.

Ross was runner-up in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:02.11 and placed sixth in the 100 hurdles in 15.34. Jenn Grube, an All-America last season, took second in the javelin with a throw of 139-1.

Other place-winners for the ESU women were Christel Hibbard, fourth in the 3000-meter steeplechase in a school-record 11:48.31, and sixth in the 1,500-meter run in 5:20.54, and Gray, fourth in the 400-meter dash in a personal-best 57.59.

The Warriors' Doug Springer was fourth in the pole vault at 14-4. The men's 4 x 100-meter relay team of Stinson, John Van Soest, Andrew Morris and Tom Schultz also was fourth in a season-best 42.52.

Slippery Rock easily won the women's title with 133 points with Lock Haven second with 94. ESU was the top PSAC Eastern Division school with its 85 points just edging Millersville 84 and Kutztown 83 1/2.

Kutztown was the men's champion with 138 points followed by Lock Haven 85 and Slippery Rock 71.
