ESU Track and Field in Lafayette Invitational
EASTON - Senior sprinters Shavanna Ross and Cheryl Griffin and high jumper Mike Newhard were East Stroudsburg University's top competitors in the Lafayette Track and Field Invitational Saturday.
Ross set a school record in the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.23 in placing third. She just nipped the old mark of 57.24 set by Michelle Cole in 1992.
Griffin, sidelined for the last three weeks because of a hamstring pull, won the 200-meter dash for the second straight year with a season-best winning time of 25.04, which was a tenth better than her 2000 performance.
Newhard, a freshman making his first appearance in the meet, captured the high jump with a leap of 6-7.
Mark Stinson placed second in the 200-meter dash in 22.17. He also combined with John Van Soest, Tom Schultz and Andrew Morris on a 4 x 100-meter relay team which was second in 42.83.
Christel Hibbard surpassed the NCAA Division II qualifying standard in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a school-record time of 11:50.04. She was third.
Also placing third were Ross in the high jump at 5-4 1/2, Quanette Jester in the long jump at 17-7 3/4, Doug Springer in the pole vault at 15-3 and David Dean in the javelin at 184-4.
