Brendon Travis Named Head Coach
of East Stroudsburg Tennis Teams
East Stroudsburg, Pa. - Brendon Travis, a successful high school and collegiate tennis coach in the Baltimore area, has been named head men's and women's tennis coach at East Stroudsburg University, it has been announced by Dr. Joy Richman, athletic director.
His goal will be to return ESU's tennis program to the glory it achieved during the 1960s and 1970s when the school won 11 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference tennis titles and played host to two NCAA Division II Tennis Championships.
The school has produced many former players who have gone on to distinguished careers in the sport including Mervin Heller '69, now chairman of the board and president of the United States Lawn Tennis Association (USLTA).
The alumni group also includes Laura Canfield '81, executive director of the USLTA Middle States district; Dave Kozlowski '71, winner of 2001 Alex Gordon Award as the United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) Professional of the Year; Dr. Ron Woods '64, Director of Community Player Development for the USLTA and Townsend Gilbert '71, a former vice president and board member of the USPTA.
Travis was the head coach at Calvert Hall College High School last season. He led the team to the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) team championships, the school's first since 1985. He was named the MIAA Conference Coach of the Year.
During the 2000 season, he was the head men's tennis coach at Goucher College. His team finished with a 11-6 record and tied for fourth in the Capital Athletic Conference. The team's schedule included six nationally-ranked teams at different levels including Division 1 Georgia Tech and Division II West Georgia.
Previously, he had been the boys' and girls' tennis coach at River Hill High School in Clarksville, Md. for two years.
Travis also was the head tennis professional at the Fallston Club in Fallston, Md. from 1998 until last month. He was a volunteer girls' tennis coach for his alma mater, Red Lion, Pa. High School for the last two years. The Red Lion teams finished with records of 12-1 in 2000 and 11-2 in 2001.
A graduate of Towson State, he was a member of the tennis team for two years. He earned a degree in Mass Communications and Advertising in 1995. He also has done coursework toward a master's degree in Technology in Education at Johns Hopkins University.
