ESU Track and Field/PSAC Championships Second Day

BETHLEHEM – East Stroudsburg University’s Mike Newhard is now the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference high jump champion both indoors and outdoors.

Newhard won the high jump with a leap of 6-9 at the first PSAC Indoor Track and Field Championships Sunday at Lehigh University’s Rauch Fieldhouse. He had captured the conference outdoor crown last spring at 6-10.

The sophomore from Southern Lehigh High School won on fewer misses over Kutztown’s Shawn Landis, who also cleared 6-9. Newhard went over 6-7 on his first attempt while Landis needed two jumps.

ESU’s Brad Fees, the outdoor conference runner-up last spring, placed third in the event, missing at 6-9 after being clean at every height until then, including 6-7.

Newhard almost made 6-11, the next height, getting his entire body over the bar, but hitting it on the way down. He was happy with the title, but admitted he would have liked to have gone higher in what he called his "home gym."

"This is the closest to home I get. I jumped here all through high school and have competed here several times in college. I came close at 6-11 and wish I could have cleared that and then broken the conference record of 7-0," he said after accepting his second straight PSAC gold medal.

Newhard’s career best is 7-0 and he holds the ESU indoor record at 6-10 ½. He may have another chance to reach 7-0 as he has provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships March 8-9 in Boston.

Although Newhard was the school’s only champion, the Warriors came close to other titles with two individual runners-ups in Kristin Mullin in the 800-meter run and Natasha Jarrett in the 55-meter dash and second-place finishes in both the 4 x 400-meter men’s and women’s relays.

Mullin, a junior from East Stroudsburg High School who transferred to ESU from Millersville, clocked 2:21.88 to finish behind Sara Raschiatore of IUP, named the meet’s outstanding female athlete, who won in 2:20.53.

Jarrett placed second in the 55 in 7.33 and also was fourth in both the 200 in 26.38 and the shot put with toss of 38-11. The Warriors’ Tawny Youtz also placed in both sprints with fourth in the 55 in 7.41 and fifth in the 200 in 26.53.

The Warriors’ Mark Stinson joined Jarrett in placing in three events. He was third in the 55-meter dash in 6.60 and fifth in the 200 in 22.89 after finishing as runner-up in the long jump Friday.

Stinson also anchored the 4 x 400-meter relay team which was second in 3:26.10. He took the baton 10-15 meters behind his twin brother, Matt Stinson, Lock Haven’s anchor runner, and almost caught him down the stretch with Matt hanging to give the Bald Eagles the title in 3:25.75. Mark ran a 50.2 split whiile Matt was timed in 51.1.

Other members of the ESU relay team were Matt Bevan, 52.5; Dan Garibaldi, 52.1, and Jim Dawson, 50.9.

The women’s 4 x 400-meter relay came almost as close to finishing first, losing by less than a second with a time of 4:03.68 to Shippensburg’s winning 4:03.07. Mullin ran the fastest split of 60.4 and was joined by Jackie Babbini 61.8, Youtz 60.5, and Angela Gray 61.0.

ESU had two other individual place-winners in Becky Fitz, third in the triple jump with a leap of 35-1 ¼, and Darryl Brown, fourth in the 3,000-meter run in 8:51.73.

A Pocono Mountain High School graduate, senior Corey Nolan from Shippensburg won the 55-meter hurdles in 7.61. Nolan was introduced to hurdling by then Cardinals’ assistant coach Chris Merli, now an assistant at ESU.

In the team competition, the Warriors finished fourth in the men’s standings with 62 points and seventh in the women’s with 48 points. Lock Haven won both team titles.
