EASTON - East Stroudsburg University's Mike Newhart broke a 23-year-old school record as he cleared 6-10 1/2 in the high jump to win the event at the season-opening Lafayette Indoor Track and Field Invitational Saturday.
Newhart, a sophomore from Southern Lehigh High School, bettered the mark of 6-10 1/4 set by Toby Virgil in 1978. The height also qualified him provisionally for the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships in March.
The Warriors had one other winner in the meet in Jim Dungee, who won the pole vault at 12-0.
Six Warriors placed second including sprintres Jen Eye with a time of 7.60 in the 60, Angela Gray, 27.1 in the 220, and Mark Stinson, 32.4, third best in the school's history, in the 300. Other runners-up with Pat Finnegan in the pole vault, 11-0; Glen Kercher, long jump, 21-4 3/4, and Brad Fees, high jump, 6-6.
Eye also placed third in the 200 at 27.5.
