Although softball didn’t become an intercollegiate sport until 1975, East Stroudsburg women had played the game for many years under the auspices of the Women’s Recreation Association (WRA). There were even games against outside opponents starting in 1955. The first varsity team in 1975 was coached by Dolores Kramer and posted an 11-4 record and was 4-1 in the Pennsylvania Women’s Intercollegiate Softball Tournament. One of the tournament wins was a 33-0 rout over Franklin and Marshall. Lynn Dawson was named the team’s outstanding player. Jone Bush took over as head coach in 1976 and guided the squad over thirteen seasons to a 208-193-2 record. She says her most memorable teams were her first and her last. In 1976, the Warriors (17-4) won the first Eastern Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (EAIAW) reg-ional championship, beating top-seeded West Chester, 2-0, in the finals, and qualifying for the Association for Inter-collegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) National Championships in Omaha, Nebraska. The young ESSC team was matched against all major college opponents in the AIAW tournament, but held its own. The Warriors beat the University of South Carolina, 10-0, on Lynn Kuchinskas’ no-hitter, and the University of Utah, 4-1, but lost to Arizona State, 14-4, and the University of Missouri, 3-0. Kuchinskas fashioned an 11-2 record in 1976 and bettered that the following year with a 13-1 mark. The Warriors posted their best team record ever in 1977 at 25-4 led by two .400 hitters in Sharon Harker, .429, and Robin Egerter, .402.
In 1980, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, in operation since 1960, began softball championship competition for its 14 member schools. East Stroudsburg won the first PSAC title, beating Bloomsburg, 12-3, and Lock Haven twice, 8-4 and 5-0. In the championship game, Gabi Bunk pitched a three-hit shutout and Cathy Moore belted a three- run homer. Robin Lawyer finished with a .385 batting average and in 1981, hit a school-record .432. In Bush’s last season in 1988, the Warriors compiled the most wins, 26, in the school’s history with a 26-11 record. There were three effective pitchers in Elaine Bedell (10-4), Sue Fink (10-6) and Claire Hoherchak (6-1) while catcher Kathy Lewis (.354), center fielder Denise McKeown (.333) and Fink (.302) led the hitters. McKeown broke ten school hitting records and tied two others while Bedell was a three-time All-Conference choice both as pitcher and utility player.
Another record-breaker was center-fielder-shortstop Karen Bauer, a three-time All-PSAC player from 1994-1996. She set school records for career hits, 165, and home runs, ten, while posting a .387 career batting average. She was chosen as the PSAC East Player of the Year as a senior. Other recent top players have included pitcher Jenn Huyett, who holds the career records for shutouts and strike-outs, and Marnie Koch and batters Mar-lene Renfer, Shannon Bullick, Danielle Trainor and Heather Gentilucci.
