ESU-Mansfield Softball

EAST STROUDSBURG - Mansfield rallied for the winning run in the seventh inning in each game to edge East Stroudsburg University, 2-1 and 5-4, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference softball doubleheader Thursday on Zimbar Field.

In the opener with the score tied, 1-1, Renee Grinnell singled to open the Mounties' seventh. She was sacrificed to second base and then with two out, scored on an error on Sarah Betke's groundout.

The Warriors out-hit Mansfield, 8-5, with Tara Greig going 3-for-4 with a single, double and triple and Nifer Shaw 2-for-4. They could manage only a single run off winning pitcher Lindsay Dempsey, however, singles by Greig and Shaw followed by an error in the fifth inning.

ESU took a 4-1 lead in the second game with four runs in the sixth inning with Shaw singling for one run, Erika Lee doubling for a second run and then Jill Higgins driving in two runs with a single.

The Mounties came back for the victory in the seventh inning with Kristy Lewis hitting a two-out single for the tying and go-ahead runs. Betke doubled for the first run of the inning and a bases-loaded walk forced in the second run.

Liz Lyons allowed two base runners in the bottom of the seventh on a walk and Lee's single, but got the final out on a grounder to shortstop. She struck out eight batters. Lee was 3-for-3 and Tara Buckley 2-for-4.

With the losses, the Warriors dropped to 17-21 overall and a final 10-14 record in the conference. Mansfield improved to 10-18 overall and 7-15 in PSAC play.
