SB4-25
ESU-Shippensburg Softball
SHIPPENSBURG - East Stroudsburg University's Tina Morak pitched no-hit ball for the last seven innings, but the Warriors could not score and settled for a 1-1, 16-inning tie against Shippensburg in the second game of a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference softball doubleheader Tuesday. The game was called because of darkness.
The Red Raiders (21-19-1, 11-9-1 PSAC) won the opener, 5-0, on Lindsey Williams' six-hit shutout.
The 16-inning game matched the longest in ESU softball history. The Warriors dropped a 1-0 decision to Bloomsburg in 16 innings in 1984.
Both teams scored their lone run in the ninth inning. In the top of the inning, ESU's Tara Greig led off with a single, took second on Erika Lee's sacrifice bunt and scored on Tara Buckley's single to centerfield.
Shippensburg came back in the bottom of the inning to tie the score. Suzanne Kropf and Andrea Heck hit back-to-back one-out singles and Megan Ginnick grounded into a fielder's choice at third base, leaving ESU one out from victory. Heather Bankert belted a double to centerfield, however, to drive in Heck. Ginnick also tried to score on the play, but was cut down at the plate with the potential winning run on a throw from Jill Higgins to Lee.
That was the Red Raiders' last hit as Morak was perfect the rest of the way. Williams, who relieved in the ninth, also shut out the Warriors although they had four hits including two in the final inning. Mary Beth Scotch was 3 for 7 for ESU.
In the opener, Shippensburg notched three quick runs in the first inning and added single runs in the fourth and fifth. Hollie Stover was the team's big hitter with a triple and two singles in four at-bats. Scotch was 2 for 3.
