ESU-Millersville Softball
MILLERSVILLE - Heather Currie singled in the winning run in the tenth inning as Millersville edged East Stroudsburg University, 8-7, in the second game to gain a sweep of a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division softball doubleheader Monday night.
The Marauders (12-21, 5-9 PSAC) won the first game, 5-0, as Beth Jackson hurled a four-hit shutout and Sabrina Atkins drove in two runs with a first-inning homer.
In the tenth, Brandy Gerstenberg led off with a double and was sacrificed to third base by Vicki Silvestro. After Amy Young reached on an infield single, Currie hit the game-winner.
The Warriors (14-16, 7-11 PSAC) had rallied from a 7-4 deficit to score three runs in the seventh inning and send the game into extra innings. Nifer Shaw drove in two runs with a single and Jill Higgins delivered the tying run with a single.
ESU had 18 hits including five doubles, but stranded 12 runners. Casey Dixon was 4 for 6 with three doubles, Erika Lee 3 for 6, Deana Geist 2 for 5 and Tara Greig 2 for 6.
Jackson gained both pitching victories. She allowed only four singles in the opener and then after allowing three runs in the seventh inning, pitched shutout ball for the last three innings in the second game.
