ESU-Shippensburg Softball
EAST STROUDSBURG - Lindsey Williams and Nicole Brunt both pitched four-hitters as Shippensburg downed East Stroudsburg University, 3-2 and 2-0, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference softball doubleheader Tuesday.
Williams did not give up an earned run, struck out three batters and walked none in the first-game win. Brunt tossed a shutout with five strikeouts and two walks in the second contest.
In the opener, the Warriors scored a first-inning run as Nifer Shaw reached on an error and Mary Beth Scotch drove her home with single. The Red Raiders went ahead in the third inning on Alison Lee's two-run single. They added a single run in the sixth as Sandy Smith singled and Brenna Eck doubled her in.
ESU notched a seventh-inning run as Scotch and Casey Dixon singled, but with runners on first and second base, Williams fielded the last two outs herself on a grounder and a line drive.
Scotch was 2-for-3 in the first game and 1-for-3 in the second, making her 9-for-16 over the last five contests with seven RBIs.
Shippensburg's runs in the second game came in the fourth inning on an error and in the seventh on Eck's second double of the day.
The Warriors threatened in the seventh, putting runners on first and second with two out as Dixon singled and Higgins reached on an error. Brunt struck out the last two batters, however, to preserve her shutout, her fifth of the season and second against ESU.
The two losses dropped ESU back under the .500 mark at 17-19 overall and 10-12 in the conference. Shippensburg is now 26-20 overall and 14-8 in PSAC play.
