ESU-West Chester Softball
EAST STROUDSBURG - Mary Beth Scotch drove in the winning runs in both games as East Stroudsburg University swept its second straight softball doubleheader, beating West Chester, 5-4 in eight innings and 2-0, Saturday on Zimbar Field.
Scotch, a senior leftfielder from Scranton, went 4-for-7 with a double and a triple and four RBIs in the two games.
In the opener, Scotch rapped a hard ground single down the third base line to score pinch-runner Dana Parrish from second base with the winning run. It came with two outs in the bottom of the eighth. Nifer Shaw had led off with a single and Parrish went in to run and took second on a passed ball.
The Warriors had rallied from a 4-1 deficit with three runs in the fourth inning. Erika Lee and Tara Buckley singled and Scotch belted a two-run triple to left centerfield. Jill Higgins then singled to bring home Scotch with the tying run.
Pitcher Tina Morak shut out West Chester for the last five innings to gain the victory. Scotch, Lee and Buckley all went 2-for-4.
The Warriors' other pitcher, Monica Sobolesky spun a three-hit shutout in the second game. She struck out two batters, walked four and stranded five base-runners.
Scotch provided the only run the team needed. She doubled in the fourth inning to drive in Lee from second base. Lee had singled and taken second on Buckley's sacrifice.
ESU added an insurance run in the fifth inning as Ashling Stevens singled, took second on Tara Greig's single, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on Shaw's sacrifice fly. Scotch and Greig both were 2 for 3 in the game.
The sweep lifted the Warriors back to the .500 mark at 17-17 overall and 10-10 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. West Chester is now 14-26 overall and 2-14 in PSAC play.
