ESU-Kutztown Softball

KUTZTOWN - Kutztown used timely hits to overcome a sensational hitting performance by East Stroudsburg University's Tara Buckley and sweep a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference softball doubleheader, 5-3 and 3-2, Wednesday.

Buckley went 3 for 4 with two doubles and a single and drove in two runs in the opener. The freshman from Pottsville was then 2 for 2 with a homer and an RBI in the second game.

The Golden Bears (26-10, 13-3 PSAC) rallied from a 3-0 deficit in the first game. They scored three runs in the sixth inning on two walks and pinch-hitter Curin Romich's homer over the centerfield fence. They won the game in the seventh as Augie Nunan singled, was sacrificed to second and came home on an error on Kristy Gestl's grounder. Gestl then scored on a fielder's choice grounder.

In the second contest, Kutztown scored all three of its runs in the third inning. A walk and consecutive singles by Gestl, DeFilippo and Kellie Evans produced two runs and the third came home on Romich's groundout.

Tara White hurled shutout ball for the final four innings to win the opener and raise her record to 12-5. Evans tossed a four-hitter in the nightcap and is now 13-3.

ESU dropped to 12-14 overall and 7-9 in the conference.
