MANSFIELD – Freshman Monica Sobolesky pitched her first career shutout as East Stroudsburg University edged Mansfield, 1-0, in the second game of a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference softball doubleheader Tuesday.
The Mounties won the opener, 3-1, scoring single runs in the first three innings to back Lindsay Dempsey’s four-hit pitching.
Sobolesky gave up five hits, but didn’t walk a batter. She struck out two in raising her season record to 7-5. Her earned run average is now 1.40 with 17 runs allowed in 85 1/3 innings.
The Warriors scored the game’s lone run in the sixth inning. Dana Parrish singled and was sacrificed to second by Nifer Shaw. She took third on Casey Dixon’s single to leftfield and came home on a throwing error on the play.
Parrish and Deana Geist were 2-for-3 against Mansfield pitcher Liz Lyon.
In the first game, ESU scored a first-inning run as Geist singled, stole second base and raced in on Tara Buckley’s single. Mansfield tied the game in the bottom of the first on Jess Ricker’s single and went ahead with a second-inning run as Angi Crater singled and Sarah Betke doubled her home.
The split left the Warriors at the .500 mark at 12-12 overall and 6-6 in the conference.
Mansfield is now 8-6 overall and 5-3 in PSAC play. It was the home opener for the Mounties.
