ESU Softball Thursday

East Stroudsburg, Pa. - For the fourth time, East Stroudsburg University's softball team won the first game and lost the second of a Rebel Spring Games doubleheader.

The Warriors beat LIU-Southampton, 5-2, in Thursday opener as Mardelle Swoyer pitched a three-hitter and Tara Buckley went 3 for 4 at the plate, but then bowed to Binghamton, 8-0. The team is now 4-4.

In the victory, ESU took a 4-1 lead in the fourth inning on four straight run-producing singles by Nifer Shaw, Erika Lee, Casey Dixon and Buckley. A successful double steal by Wendy Witmer, who slide across with the run, and Deana Geist added an insurance run in the fourth inning.

Shaw went 2 for 2 and Lee 2 for 4. Swoyer struck out one batter and walked none in her second win of the season.

In the second game, Binghamton's Margaret Yerdon tossed a five-hit shutout and Alicia Bozek was 3 for 4 with two runs-batted-in. Mary Beth Scotch went 2 for 2 for ESU.

The Warriors will end their Florida trip today with games against Erskine, S.C. at 2:30 p.m. and Augustana, S.D. at 4:20.
