ESU Softball in Rebel Spring Games

OSCEOLA, Fla. – East Stroudsburg University’s Casey Dixon and ‘Nifer Shaw belted home runs, but the Warriors bowed to Merrimack College, 4-3, in the second game of a Rebel Spring Games softball doubleheader Tuesday.

The Warriors dropped the opener to Augustana, 9-3. The same teams had met Sunday with ESU beating Augustana, 2-1 in eight innings, but losing to Merrimack, 9-0.

Dixon hit her homer, a solo shot, in the second inning and Shaw followed with another solo homer in the third. The Warriors added a second run in the third on singles by Deana Geist and Tara Greig, combined with an error, to take a 3-1 lead.

Merrimack tied the game with two runs in the fifth inning and then won the game in the sixth as Tricia Andrews walked, took second on a grounder and third on a passed ball and scored on Heather Sargent’s single.

Geist and Shaw both went 2-for-3 for ESU.

In the first game, Augustana broke a 2-2 tie with four runs in the second inning, three of them scoring on Megan Faris’ bases-loaded double.

The Warriors were led by Erika Lee, 2 for 3 with an RBI, and Jill Higgins, 2 for 4.

The two losses dropped ESU’s record to 2-4. The team will have an off day today before playing LIU-Southampton at 9 a.m. and UMass-Lowell at 11 a.m. Thursday.
