East Stroudsburg, Pa. - Swimmer Erin Kowalik and track and field sprinter Cheryl Griffin, both named Academic All-Americas, head the list of 79 East Stroudsburg University athletes who have been recognized as Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Scholar-Athletes

To be eligible for the PSAC Scholar-Athlete award, a student-athlete must attain a 3.25 cumulative grade point average while competing in an intercollegiate sport.

The 79 honorees, 49 women and 30 men, is one less than last year which was the highest total in the school's history. The total represents just under 20 percent of the school's total athletic population.

Kowalik was chosen on the Verizon Academic All-America second team while Griffin was a third team choice. Both were seniors.

The women's track and field team had the most PSAC Scholar-Athletes with 11 followed by the field hockey team with nine and the football team with eight.

All 19 ESU teams had at least one athlete honored. The women's volleyball team, the PSAC Eastern Division champion, had four of its six starters recognized.

Ten PSAC Scholar-Athletes also were All-Conference selections in their respective sports. They are Kevin Nagle, football; Christel Hibbard, cross country; Kelly Derby and Rachel Miller, field hockey; Griffin, Mike Newhard and Mark Stinson, track and field; Ashleigh Reinert and April Mellott, volleyball; and Kelly Hutchison, basketball

There are five local products on the team in football players Nagle and Bryan Falcone, soccer player Brad Konawalik and track and field and cross country runner Mike Browne, all from Pleasant Valley High School, and baseball pitcher Matt DelGuidice from Pocono Mountain High School.
