East Stroudsburg, Pa. - A total of 80 East Stroudsburg University athletes have been recognized as Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Scholar-Athletes for the 1999-2000 school year, it has been announced by Julie Del Giorno, ESU academic coordinator for athletics.

To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must attain at least a 3.25 cumulative grade point average while competing in an intercollegiate sport.

The 80 honorees, 46 women and 34 men, is the highest ever for the Warriors and represents 18.5 percent of the total athletic population, according to Del Giorno.

The football team had the most PSAC Scholar-Athlete with 11 followed by the women's track and field team with ten and the field hockey team with eight.

Heading the list are four ESU athletes who earned PSAC Top Ten seasonal scholar-athlete awards during the past year. They are football linebacker Mike Rhine, honored after the fall season; basketball point guard Marie Schlegel, winter, and track and field sprinter Cheryl Griffin and lacrosse third home Kristin Restivo, spring.

Eleven PSAC Scholar-Athletes also were All-Conference first team selections in their respective sports. They are cross country runners Matt Stohl, Christel Hibbard and Amy Walbert, soccer players Jorge Chapoy and Sean Stewart, lacrosse players Restivo, Andrea Demidont and Megan Macauley, track and field competitors Cheryl Griffin and Kelli Strickler and wrestler Rich Koehler.

There are two local products on the team in track and field and cross country runners Mike Browne and Jerilyn Collenburg, both from Pleasant Valley High School.
