ESU-Harvard Men's Volleyball

EAST STROUDSBURG - East Stroudsburg University used a balanced hitting and a sturdy defense to outlast Harvard in an Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Hay Division match, 30-28, 31-29 and 30-27, Saturday in the Koehler Fieldhouse.

The Warriors moved to 2-2 in the division while Harvard fell to 1-2. Overall, ESU is now 4-3 while the Crimson are 4-2.

Mike Messinger led the Warriors with ten kills while Jason Hartzel and Tom Shaver getting nine apiece, Dustin Wood eight and Jarrett Merkel six. Hartzel had the best hitting avearge at .640 with Merkel next at .600. They were set up by Chris James, who made 36 assists.

Harvard had the match leader in kills in 6-7 Justin Denham with 17, but he also made ten errors. Brian Stevenson, another 6-7 player, had 14 kills for the Crimson.

The ESU defense kept the ball in play and often the long rallies finally resulted in Harvard errors. Messinger made 13 digs and Brian Harvey 11. Hartzel was the leader in blocks with five.
