Four Warriors on All-PSAC Men's Soccer First Team
East Stroudsburg, Pa. - Four players from East Stroudsburg University's championship men's soccer team have been named to the All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference team announced Wednesday.
Forward Jorge Chapoy, midfielder Karl Nusshag and back Sean Stewart are all repeaters on the All-PSAC first team while goalie Jason Land has been honored on the squad for the first time.
Two other ESU players, forward Tom Mustac and back Kurt Nusshag, were chosen on the second team.
A total of 27 players, 13 on the first team and 14 on the second, were selected in a vote of the conference's nine head men's soccer coaches.
Forward Tomas Boltnar of PSAC runner-up California was selected as the PSAC Player of the Year with the Vulcans' Dennis Laskey picked as the Coach of the Year. Kutztown midfielder John Laport was named the Rookie of the Year.
Chapoy leads the Warriors in scoring with 20 goals and eight assists for 28 points heading into an NCAA Division II first round tournament game at Dowling Sunday. The sophomore from Monclova, Mexico has scored goals in 14 games including the last five in a row. He had a pair of 'hat tricks' with four goals against Molloy and three against Shippensburg.
Karl Nusshag has been a four-year starter for the team and an anchor in the midfield area. He is tied for the team lead in assists with eight and has scored three goals for 14 points. The senior from Media missed the PSAC championship game win over California because of a pulled hamstring muscle and his status for this weekend is uncertain.
Stewart plays sweeper back and is the main player on a defense which has allowed only 12 goals in 20 games with 11 shutouts. The sophomore from St. Elizabeth, Jamaica was chosen as the outstanding player in last year's 3-0 PSAC title game win over Lock Haven. He has scored one goal and has two assists.
Land posted his sixth straight shutout with five saves and was named the top player in the championship game against California. He hasn't allowed a goal in 572 minutes. For the season, the junior from Carney's Point, N.J. has given up four goals in 11 games with eight shutouts for an 0.35 goal-against average.
Mustac was second on the ESU team in scoring with ten goals and eight assists for 28 points. The junior from West Milford, N.J. had two goals apiece in wins over NCAA tournament selection St. Anselm and Bloomfield and one goals in six other games.
Kurt Nusshag plays an outside back position for the team and has helped mark and shut down some of the opponent's top players. The junior from Media has contributed two goals and three assists.
