Men's Soccer - ESU 5, St. Anselm 1

MANCHESTER, N.H. - East Stroudsburg University got its men's soccer season off to a sensational start by trouncing St. Anselm, 5-1, in the first round of the New Hampshire College Tournament Friday night. The Hawks had beaten ESU, 3-0, in last year's opener.

The game matched two 1999 conference championship teams. ESU won its third straight Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference title last year and finished 18-3. St. Anselm captured its second straight Northeast-10 title and wound up 19-2.

The Warriors took the lead after only six minutes as Jorge Chapoy slotted a shot into the left side of the goal after Ahmet Kose's cross deflected off a defender.

Jason Cropper, a freshman from Trinidad, contributed to the other two first-half goals. On the first, he booted a through-pass to Tom Mustac, who scored on a breakaway. Then Chapoy set up Cropper for a shot into the near post to make the score, 3-0, at halftime.

In the second half, Mustac tallied his second goal with Kamar Samuels getting an assist and Kose finished off the ESU scoring following a long cross from Chris Farina.

Goalie Conor Fry had to make only two saves in posting the victory. The Warriors will play their second tournament Sunday at 12 noon against New Hampshire on the St. Anselm field.
