ESU vs. Barry NCAA Semi-Finals
Miami Shores, Fl. - Fitzgerald Clarke headed in a goal with just under 20 minutes remaining to give host Barry University a 2-1 victory over East Stroudsburg University in the semi-finals of the NCAA Division II men's soccer championships, Friday night.
Barry, 17-3, will now play Cal-State Dominguez Hills, 22-1-1, for the national title, Sunday at 1 p.m. on Buccaneers field.
ESU's season ended with an 18-3-2 record, tied for the most wins in the school's history. It was the Warriors first appearance in the NCAA Final Four.
The winning goal was set up by Carrington Brown who took a pass from Alen Marcina and got free down the right side of the field. He dribbled almost to the end-line before crossing a pass to the left side of the ESU goal where Clarke lowered his head and knocked the ball into the right corner of the net.
After a scoreless first half the Buccaneers had taken a 1-0 lead early in the second half as Alex Chirinos literally booted the ball through goalie Jason Land from six yards out on the left side. Marco Valez and Clarke set up the play and were credited with assists.
ESU answered to tie the score six minutes later as Eric Kolar took a free kick and booted the ball to Sean Stewart who took it almost to the end-line and crossed it into the left corner of the nets.
The game was evenly played with Barry having a slight 16-13 edge in shots. ESU's best chance came with 11 minutes left when Stewart took a free kick from just outside the box and rifled the ball to the upper left corner but goalie Ron Goguen dove to his right to make the save.
"I thought the ball was in," said ESU Coach Jerry Sheska. "The kid literally took it out of the corner. He came up big with a number of key saves at the end."
"It was a fantastic game," said Sheska. "It was the championship caliber play that you would expect at this level in the tournament, the difference was they put their chances in and we missed a couple."
A raucaus crowd of ESU fans, both students and parents who traveled from the Northeast and alumni from Florida, cheered mightily for the team. At times it seemed as if it were an ESU home game, as the Warriors had louder support than Barry.
