ESU-Millersville Men's Soccer
East Stroudsburg, Pa. - East Stroudsburg University completed an unbeaten Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference regular season for the first time in five years and won its 12th straight game by beating Millersville, 3-0, in a men's soccer game Sunday at Eiler-Martin Stadium.
A crowd of close to 1,000 Super Soccer Sunday fans watched as the Warriors raised their season record to 17-2 to tie the school mark for most regular-season victories set by the 1994 team which was 17-3.
Coach Jerry Sheska's squad finished 8-0 in the PSAC and will play host to either Lock Haven or Bloomsburg in the conference championship game next Sunday at 1 p.m.
Ahmet Kose scored a goal and had an assist for the Warriors and Jason Land posted his second straight shutout and fourth of the season.
Kose set up the first goal which came after only nine minutes as he pushed a pass to Jorge Chapoy, who curved the ball into the lower left corner of the nets from the top of the box.
The Warriors held that 1-0 lead for more than 50 minutes with Land diving to the right to stop a point-blank shot by Millersville's Mark Lilly which would have tied the game.
Midway through the second half, ESU back Kurt Nusshag cleared the ball from midfield and kicked it into the box. A Millersville defender tried to head it, but missed and Kose headed it to Pat Stanco, whose weak shot was short and wide left. Kose slid in to beat the goalie Chris Smith to the ball and knocked it into the nets.
The Warriors scored on a breakaway with 20 minutes as Brad Konawalik, a sophomore from Pleasant Valley High School and a transfer from Millersville, beat his teammates after a pass from Channing Swears.
Stanco, the conference's leading scorer with 19 goals, had his 11-game scoring streak broken.
Land made four saves in 77 minutes of action before Conor Fry finished up.
Smith had three saves for the Marauders, who closed their season with a 9-11 overall record and a 2-6 PSAC mark.
